Hunter, about 24 months ago at Lossless Legs, I commented to you that you might consider doing a matrix for 6/9/73. I said that Kevin Tobin had recently matrixed the 6/10/73 show. I said I had just circulated my 6/9 AUD. You said you would give it a listen.

I experimented with it myself some months back, to see how well it might work. Point is, the 6/9 SBD and my 6/9 AUD speeds are somewhat off. I tried some pitch correction and resampling schemes. The SBD vs AUD speed differential slews over the span of the show for 6/9. I recall that it was different for each track. I had to stretch the times a little bit for the 1st set. Then I had to start compressing the times during the 2nd set. This was a big problem. A tape tension error, or a reel-servo error, could cause a problem like this. The matrix would start sounding a bit thick and muddy when I mixed it Samplitude's VIP mode. I was using 60% SDB / 40% AUD mix.

There's only one other partial AUD for 6/9 to compare with. This source is a Nagra, but the mic location really sucks. The taper is way back in the stands. It sounds like he was in the end zone. But I d/l that Loose Lucy anyway, just to compare that tape speed with mine. If I remember correctly, his tape is yet a 3rd and different speed. Never mind this source.

Both my 6/9 and 6/10 AUDs had some tape damage. Also, a couple of the master cassette reels were transplanted into surrogate housings. It was a lot of work doing the transfer. I used my 37-year-old Nak 550. I'm wondering if maybe a fresh transfer from a much better cassette deck might be better. 16 months ago I acquired a very nice Nakamichi LX-3 deck. It has superior tape-handling. It features dual capstan motors for its tape transport.

There's a couple of spots in Kevin's matrix from 6/10 that sound out of sync. I think a matrix should be perfect. If we can get 6/9 matrixed perfectly with a fresh transfer, I can do a fresh transfer of 6/10 the same way, and we can fix that. There's a couple of flaws in my 6/9. Promised Land's crossfade isn't matched well. I've fixed that. Playin' in the Band has a flaw deep into the jam. It's a cut, and I missed that when I remastered it. I think my deck was accidentally paused during taping.

Hey Monte,

Yeah, I recall that conversation, and thank you for the suggestion. The speed issues you are describing do not sound too problematic for achieving sync throughout the show. I do recall, however, that I tried that 6/9 out and was not digging the results in general - while it is a sweet AUD recording. This was WAY back in '08, I think, so I might hear it differently now. On top of that, I have undergone some unexplainable condition where I feel an overwhelming sense of matrix paralysis, as though Cliff has put a voodoo curse on me or something. I hope I can muster up some matrix powers this year, or forever hold my peace, but there's some strange vibes goin' down here and I think the only solution is binge drinking.

Yes, I've been paralyzed too with similar issues. I'm on a parallel track to you. It's been established here that AUDs are evil and Tapers like me are terrorists. Peace is unfathomable.

I have my MMJ permit and I'm surrounded by MMJ dispensaries to keep my sanity. Binging on 420 is healthy. Attempting to matrix "perfectly" the 6/9 and 6/10 shows is an act of self-destruction. Might be a couple of weeks of work. Could be suicide. That's why I've avoided this.

Did you ever see the movie I made at the Xtra Normal site? I wrote, shot cameras, produced, and directed my movie for the Fort Collins City Council to watch. I also e-mailed them. I was trying to tell them to get the Fort Collins cops to stop driving their SUVs on our bicycle paths when all they're doing is routine patrols. That's bullshit for non-emergencies! 2 years ago one cop was patrolling Poudre Trail in his Crown Victoria cruiser. I was riding my bicycle the other way. Poudre Trail is a recreation path. At this location it is narrow and it has some huge curves. The cop nearly ran me off the trail and into Poudre River. I'm still pissed off about that. I've seen the cops still doing these reckless patrols, in total disregared of: regulations, common sense, hazards to bicycle riders, and our peace and harmony.
